The True Vine

Bearing much fruit is not a demand, but a promise and result of abiding in Christ. Fruit is not a result of the branch’s effort; it is the responsibility of the vine. That is one reason Christ used the grapevine as a picture of the Christian’s relationship to Him. A far cry from today’s watered-down messages, this fine piece of literature continues to be a worthwhile and enlightening addition to a Christian’s library. The lessons are quite provoking and are intended to help bring about, by the grace of God, a spiritual work of surrender and submission to the will and control of Christ our Lord.

The author has included short examples of sincere prayer at the end of each chapter. The great challenge is to be finished with one’s own agenda and way of life (which ends in failure), putting it away in exchange for a life filled with God, in order that God would be God in man. In meditating on and coming to know the True Vine, one will receive blessings untold in sweet fellowship with the risen Christ; and the work that God longs to complete in His children becomes a reality in the life of the one who has yielded.

This simple work is written in such a way as to make God’s Word clear. Murray was able to reach the young and underprivileged of his day with his straightforward preaching and writing. As he lived, fully abiding in the Lord, so these words of Christ are made clear for another century.
