What About the Jesus Film?

“Last week I was just talking with a missionary from New Guinea. I asked him about the ‘Jesus’ film. He said it has wrought havoc in New Guinea. The animists, the pagans, the idol worshipers, they just add this figure that they’ve seen in this movie [the ‘Jesus’ film], and he becomes one more spirit being to whom they pray.

“In India, you know, you've got 330 million gods--one more isn’t going to change much. This ‘Jesus’ they see becomes another avatar, another incarnation of Vishnu, and so forth.
