When I was about five years old, my Pa and I were walking in the dirt driveway around the house when he pocked up a little shell. "See here, this proves that the whole world was covered by the ocean one time," he told me. Not long after that we were out in the driveway again, when he picked up a little rock and showed me a crack in it. "Every rock in the world is cracked, Joe, because when Christ was crucified, the rocks were rent, and you'll never find a rock that isn't cracked." Those two lessons had a profound impact on me. Pa was a cowboy, but he gave up the rodeo to become a Primitive Baptist minister of the Gospel in 1955 when I was eleven. He baptized me the same year. It was the happiest day of my life. I was once asked who I wanted to be like when I grew up. "Jesus Christ and my Pa," I replied seriously.

The verses, from Genesis and Matthew are some of the first verses ever taught me. When I started writing this book in January of 1998, I went back out to the old farm to the driveway and found this little shell, a Texigryphea and a rock just like the ones my Pa showed me back then. A shark's tooth was the first fossil I ever found, at age 12, in 1957. It is from a great white shark, probably from a gravel pit near Floydada, Texas. One Sunday after church, we boys were playing in the street nearby, when this tooth caught my eye sitting on a gravel pile. "A dinosaur tooth!" I exclaimed. They have fascinated me ever since.
