B06850 - The Tozer Topical Reader - HB
Tozer, A W - WingSpread Publishers
This topical 1,400-entry set excerpted from Tozer's writings provides a comprehensive and indispensable reference for devotional readers, teachers, and pastors. User-friendly Scripture referencing and indexing also included. (Two volumes) From the back cover: Born on a small farm between the spiny ridges of Western Pennsylvania, A.W. Tozer rose to recognition as a 20th-century prophet with exacting literary abilities and a God-focused yet humorous preaching ministry. Ron Eggert holds a Th.M. from Dallas Theological Seminary and served in pastoral and youth ministries for thirty years. He is currently a regional representative for Mastermedia International, a ministry of evangelism and discipleship with executives in the film and television industry. Ron lives with his wife Dianna in Garland, Texas. They have three grown children. Introduction: I finally had to quit quoting Tozer in my preaching. It got to the point where as soon as I mentioned his name people began to chuckle, as in "Here we go again." And I could just hear Larry Colclasure, grinning on the right front pew, thinking, "Does Eggert ever read anybody else?" The fact is, over the years I have collected read and quoted from everything published by A. W. Tozer (42 different books, I think). No mater what I was preaching I found he contributed an incredibly insightful, up-to-date, poignant thought. Though he died in 1963 his prophetic pronouncements touched me right where my current concerns were. I'm probably out of step with the current thrust of the church, with its constant emphasis on success, growth, and numbers. Tozer's message may not be what we want to hear. But when I read what he says about worship, what he writes about the current condition of the church, where his heart pants for the knowledge of the holy, I cry out that we today might recapture some of his spirit. In the TOZER TOPICAL READER I have sought to capture the essence of A. W. Tozer. There are eminently quotable excerpts, but beyond that I trust they are passages that will give the reader a sense of the passion that consumed Tozer throughout his ministry. My prayer is that these volumes will serve not only as a rich source of quotable material that people across the church spectrum will find here a rich source of devotional encouragement and spiritual stimulation. If Tozer was right as he lamented the weak condition of the evangelical church (And what would he think of the church today?), we desperately need to hear his challenge. We desperately need to get back to a pursuit of God, a knowledge of the holy. We desperately need to retrieve our harp for its intended purpose. (See entry 1361.) --Ron Eggert, November, 1998
