Bearing much fruit is not a demand, but a promise and result of abiding in Christ. Fruit is not a result of the branch’s effort; it is the responsibility of the vine. That is one reason Christ used the grapevine as a picture of the Christian’s relationship to Him.

Times change, but God’s principles of prayer are timeless. Andrew Murray reminds us that only when the church gives herself up to the holy calling of intercession—a calling that Christ Himself ever lives to perform—can we expect the power of Christ to be manifested on the church’s behalf.

“My Lord, O King, according to thy saying, I am thine, and all that I have.” Words of absolute surrender with which every child of God ought to yield himself to his Father. We all want to be absolutely surrendered to God, yet we hardly dare to utter the words.
