Ephesians:5:18 tells us that we are not to be “drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit…” in contrast to the flesh. The issue here is control. As wine to a certain degree controls us and influences our actions, we in contrast must be filled with the Spirit. The Holy Spirit then becomes that which prompts our praying, singing, and blessing. The Scriptures continually urge us to consider the example of the Lord Jesus Christ, who did everything in submission to and dependence upon His Father (John:5:19; 8:28; 14:10).

"And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord."
