Concerning John:20:23, one must read one’s presuppositions into the verse to support the doctrine of papal authority. Further, the Lord Jesus says nothing about passing a supposed authority on to a select group of individuals. In fact, the Scriptures are consistent in testimony that only God can truly forgive sins (Luke:5:21). Finally, anything given to the apostles by the Lord is not exclusive to them. The Lord Jesus assured them that “he [everyone] that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father” (John:14:12).
