See All..., one must read one’s presuppositions into the verse to support the doctrine of papal authority. Further, the Lord Jesus says nothing about passing a supposed authority on to a select group of individuals. In fact, the Scriptures are consistent in testimony that only God can truly forgive sins (Luke:5:21And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?
See All...). Finally, anything given to the apostles by the Lord is not exclusive to them. The Lord Jesus assured them that “he [everyone] that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father” (John:14:12Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
