Romans 12 concludes with instructions that override any preoccupation with spiritual gifts, telling us that love is to be without dissimulation, that we are to prefer one another, to be diligent, fervent, joyful, patient, instant in prayer and practical service, and not wise in our own conceits. To repeat a well-worn phrase, are we worshiping the gift or the Giver? Why do we look outside the Scriptures for understanding?
"Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good."
