While the very term “psychology [1]” acknowledges the psyche, there was a stubborn insistence that the psyche was merely the sum total of purely physiological reactions to physical stimuli. For nearly a century, psychologists and psychiatrists clung to Freud’s medical model and B. F. Skinner’s behavioristic theories, both of which stubbornly (and against common sense) tried to explain thought, emotions, and personality in terms of the physical body alone.
This delusion held on longer than it should have due to the proud determination to establish psychology [1] as a science [2]. There can be no science [2] of the spirit, for science [2] has no means of observing spirits. Nevertheless, the Mind Science [2] cults, as we have seen (Christian Science [2], Religious Science [2], Science [2] of Mind, et al.), tried to make a science [2] out of spirituality and have thereby fallen deeply into the occult.
