Even though he has been discredited, two of Freud’s theories remain as the major underpinnings of most psychology [1] and psychotherapy: the unconscious and psychic determinism. Freud claimed to have discovered that human behavior is driven by urges arising out of childhood traumas and which lie hidden in a region called the unconscious and can only be accessed and cured by psychotherapy. Professor Dawes expressed his outrage:

“The most pernicious of these beliefs is that adult behavior is determined mainly by childhood experiences, even very subtle ones, and particularly those that enhance or diminish self-esteem.”
