Even the secular press at times questioned this ecumenical looseness. Time magazine asked Mother Teresa a number of questions in December 1989. Her answers were revealing.

Time: Here in Calcutta, have you created a real change?

Teresa: [We’ve] created a worldwide awareness of the poor.

Time: Beyond showing the poor to the world, have you conveyed any message about how to work with the poor?

Teresa: You must make them feel loved and wanted. They are Jesus for me…in disguise.

Time: What do you think of Hinduism?

Teresa: I love all religions….
