Merton rejoiced “in Vatican II’s openness to Oriental religions,” and Merton himself “strongly identified with Eastern mysticism, especially Zen [Buddhism].” He commended Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic mystics as “those who had experienced…union with the God of truth and love.” Merton saw “no contradiction between Zen and Christianity.”
