One soon discovers that everything depends upon how “species” is defined and that the experts don’t agree among themselves. In the Foreword to Dawkins’s The Selfish Gene, Robert Trivers said, “Natural selection has built us, and it is natural selection we must understand if we are to comprehend our own identities.” What is this identity that Trivers and Dawkins want us to understand and that has been given to us by natural selection, which, as an unthinking process, knows nothing about “identity”?
