Dawkins speaks with such confident authority! Has he, or anyone else, ever verified in controlled experiments that 49 percent or 50 percent of an eye could exist, much less function—or that half an eye could really see one percent better than 49 percent? One may be absolutely certain that Dawkins has no experimental data to support such claims. Suppose we ask, “Instead of 50 percent of an eye, what good would 1 percent of an eye be?” It couldn’t be 1 percent better than no eye. Dawkins is offering a desperate argument that common sense immediately recognizes as fallacious. Half an eye has no value at all, and natural selection would have eliminated it as worthless long before it got to that stage of “evolutionary development.” This is make-believe, at which Dawkins is the unsurpassed master, all the while presenting it as fully established scientific fact. The man has built his worldwide reputation on such imaginative tales presented in book after book, all of them bestsellers that have charmed millions of eager readers.
