Esalen became the New Age center on the West Coast before the term “New Age” became known. Esalen was into “channeling” spirit entities long before it became popular. Esalen had its own resident “channeler,” a young English woman named Jenny O’Connor. By means of automatic writing, a group of nonhuman entities calling themselves “The Nine” (and allegedly based on the star Sirius), delivered regular messages through Jenny and were at times quite remarkable for their uncanny precognitive accuracy.
