It is very clear from Genesis to Revelation that God's special people, the children of Israel, are distinct from all other peoples on earth. Beginning with Abraham, God set forth specific conditions that governed His relationship with His chosen people and which, at the same time, would guard them from any worldly influence—injunctions that ancient Israel repeatedly violated and modern Israel has abandoned. Originally Israel had not only a distinct religion, but its dietary and hygienic laws and entire way of life, established for her by God, were designed to maintain her separation and prevent any intermingling with the Gentiles. Israel's uniqueness was, of course, obvious to the other nations around her.
