Copenhagen Climate Summit Flop Feared [Excerpts]

The Foreign Ministry has cancelled 20,000 overnight hotel reservations meant for people attending the United Nations Climate Change Conference in December. The move is expected to cost the hotel industry about 40 million kroner in lost revenue. The ministry described the cancellations as a natural 'adjustment'. But Thomas Færgeman, the director of environmental think tank Concito, was concerned the government had lost confidence that it could broker a ground-breaking climate and had therefore lowered expectations as to how many participants were expected.

The much-ballyhooed UN summit on climate change, scheduled to take place on September 22 in New York, is mired in controversy even before it gets off the ground. The 130 developing countries of the Group of 77 have expressed serious concern over what they claim are lopsided logistical arrangements, and worse still, the possibility of several heads of state being left out in the cold.

The British tax office arrested seven people in London on Wednesday in a suspected 38 million pounds ($62.6 million) value-added tax fraud in the European market in carbon allowances, it said. "Those arrested are believed to be part of an organized crime group operating a network of companies trading large volumes of high-value carbon credits," it said.

Too many cool, wet days resulted in a lousy summer -- but you won't find any polar bears complaining. The cooler-than-usual summer produced thicker ice on Hudson Bay, giving the area's polar bear population several extra days to feed on tasty ringed seals. "It's probably a blip," Hedman said of the thicker ice and cooler temperatures.
