In The New Paganism of the Digital Age Ron Doyle reviews and comments on the book, TechGnosis: Myth, Magic, and Mysticism in the Age of Information by Erik Davis. Doyle posits that in the near full immersion into the digital age in all areas of life, we have become "dystopian in ways we hadn’t quite predicted":

“If the 20th century was atheistic, religiosity is now everywhere — I hardly know anyone who lives as a pure-blood rationalist, nor do I encounter many who dwell entirely within one faith or metaphysical tradition. Astrology and occultism flourish in mainstream daylight, while a revived interest in psychedelic experience and synthetic drugs has opened up gnostic wormholes amid the high-res sound-systems of nightclubs that seem more than ever like techno-pagan temples.”

The above describes not only the technologically enhanced pagan religious practices of centuries ago outside the church but also within the walls of the local gatherings of believers. This helps explain the rise of Contemplative Prayer, the Enneagram, and other Eastern metaphysical practices and beliefs in the church pews today.
