It is instructive to periodically look back at prophecies uttered by indiviuals who have been identified as modern day prophets. Among this number is Herbert W. Armstrong. As ex-Jehovah's Witness Bill Cetnar declared: "Time is the enemy of a false prophet!" Consider some of Armstrong's claims in the light of history.

From the "Plain Truth," Dec. 1940: The nation of Britain will be conquered by Nazi Germany.

"We have made but the slightest dent in Jap defenses in the Pacific, and at the present rate, it will take us about 20 years" to defeat them (1944 "Plain Truth" magazine).

In the early 1950's the "Plain Truth" predicted Christ would return in 1957.

Through the 1960's the "Plain Truth" repeatedly claimed 1972 would be the year of Christ's coming.

After 1969 came and went, Armstrong claimed it would be 1975.

"When a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him" (Deuteronomy:18:22).

"But the prophet which shall presume to speak a word in my name which I have not commanded him to speak or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die" (Deuteronomy:18:20).
