'Gay' activists seeing red over Christmas ornament

While homosexual activists are upset that greeting card giant Hallmark has released a very un-"gay" Christmas ornament, a pro-family spokesman explains why he's on Hallmark's side.

A 2013 Christmas ornament just released by Hallmark uses lyrics from the Christmas song "Deck the Halls." But instead of the holiday sweater-shaped ornament displaying the usual phrase, it says: "Don we now our FUN apparel!" The Associated Press reports that critics are charging the greeting card company with making "an unnecessary political statement." Hallmark has responded, saying multiple meanings attached to the word "gay" meant the sweater's lyrics would be "open to misinterpretation."

Peter LaBarbera of American for Truth About Homosexuality addresses the controversy.

"Who could blame Hallmark for changing the Christmas carol from 'Don we now our gay apparel' to 'Don we now our fun apparel' because homosexual activists stole the word 'gay,'" he wonders. "It used to mean 'happy' and 'joyful' – and now it means, basically, identifying a sexual perversion: homosexuality. So I don't blame Hallmark for making this change."

The traditional values advocate points out most people would not wear a shirt with the word 'gay' on it, so it makes sense not to put it on an ornament.

"Homosexual activists stole that word just like they stole the rainbow," he observes. "Now, I don't believe we should let these words go, but it looks like 'gay' is too far gone. We're not going to let the rainbow be used solely as a homosexual symbol, so we're going to fight that. But the fact is, homosexual activists are constantly stealing good things and adapting them to suit their sexual perversion."

Hallmark says no political statement was intended and that despite the criticism, it has no plans to stop selling the ornament. However, the company has stated "in hindsight, we realize we shouldn't have changed the lyrics on the ornament."
