The Gallup poll showed that 45 percent believe that the world is less than 10,000 years old; the same poll found that 35 percent say that evolution is well supported by the evidence; 35 percent say that it is not. According to a National Geographic survey in 2005, only 14 percent of adults in America thought that evolution was “definitely true,” while about a third firmly rejected the idea. Researchers point out that the number of Americans who are uncertain about the theory’s validity has increased over the past 20 years.
