What the average person believes to be his or her inner motives, desires, or deepest thoughts, says Dawkins and other New Atheists, are really the product of evolution turning each person into a puppet of the impersonal forces of natural selection! You think you think, but you really don’t. It’s your selfish genes doing the thinking for you, and you are a meaningless lump of protein molecules. Here is how Francis Crick (co-discoverer of the structure of the DNA molecule, along with James D. Watson and Maurice Wilkins) seriously expressed the nonsense that he promoted: “’You, your joys and your sorrows, your memories and your ambitions, your sense of personal identity and free will, are in fact no more than the behavior of a vast assembly of nerve cells and their associated molecules.”
