The most heroic efforts of environmentalists can only fall short of rescuing earth’s ecological system from the cumulative results of human carelessness, abuse, and exploitation. In contrast, Christ will restore this earth to its pollution-free, Edenic beauty and peacefulness. In the Millennium there will no longer be any need for a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Nor will the creatures themselves bite and devour one another. The pitiful suffering of even a fly caught in a spider’s web will be ended:

The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a child shall lead them.

And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

The sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice’ den….[F]or the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea. (Isaiah:11:6-8)

Poverty and famine and the crippling diseases of old age will be gone forever. Robust good health and happiness will bless all mankind. With abundance for all, there will be no cause for greed, envy, anger, and hatred. Satan’s confinement and Christ’s perfect reign for 1,000 years will make even the pettiest crimes rare. Earth will be a paradise of blessing and joy beyond present comprehension. The Millennium will display the beauties of the colorful, flowering, fruitful environment that God originally planned—a world of love and peace and joy in human relationships as well.
