Peale’s chief disciple, Robert Schuller, became a major factor in bringing acceptability to this and many other of Peale’s destructive beliefs among evangelicals. In reporting upon his attendance at the World Psychiatric Congress in Madrid in 1967, Schuller gave the impression that psychology and psychiatry were right in line with Christianity, and he continued to promote that delusion in his many books and popular television ministry. On his October 5, 1997 “Hour of Power,” Robert Schuller accepted the International Viktor Frankl Logotherapy Award. Logotherapy encouraged the patient to recognize an existential meaning to his life on earth (with no regard for heaven or hell) involving “spiritual” values minus any “religious connotations” and based upon “the Good, the True, and the Beautiful”—but not God. Logotherapy is humanistic and anti-Christian. Yet in accepting the award, Schuller said it was “the greatest honor” and that “Viktor Frankl stands second only to Jesus Christ in teaching me….”
