“As a man thinketh in his heart” is a misquotation of Scripture that is used by Christian psychologists to encourage positive self-talk and to teach an ancient occult belief: that we can make ourselves into whatever we desire by our thoughts. But the Bible doesn’t say, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so he becomes.” Solomon is warning his son that when he becomes king other rulers may invite him to a feast, but their pretense of friendship may not be sincere. Don’t be deceived, for “As he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee” (Proverbs:23:7). It is a warning that a man’s warm words may not reflect his true feelings.
