In the February 17, 1993, news conference announcing him as the recipient, Colson said, “I salute Sir John for establishing this award and doing it in such a generous way….” His acceptance speech was made in Chicago on September 2, 1993, at the Parliament of the World’s Religions (of which Templeton is a board member and major donor). This scheduled plenary event had to be moved to a special location to accommodate the crowds for that night, allowing Colson’s office to deceitfully claim that it was not a Parliament event, though the robed delegates to the Parliament representing the world’s religions were seated on the platform with Colson. The meeting was opened with “a prayer by an Islamic scholar and concluded with a meditation by a Buddhist monk.”
