Colson’s speeches were classic exercises in the religious equivalent of political correctness. There were repeated references to “moral breakdown,” “moral values,” a “rising spiritual movement in America,” and other vague terms open to differing interpretation. He spoke of “transcendent values…moral consensus…moral choices…spiritual awakening…moral revival and social renewal…moral uplift…human dignity…character and creed…traditional beliefs…Judeo-Christian heritage,” etc. All religions were equally honored with phrases such as “religious influence…every religious tradition finds common ground…religious conviction…all our creeds…true religion and its humanizing values,” etc.
