Jay Gary (with the endorsement of leading evangelicals) speaks favorably of this event as part of the tradition that each century, “as the pope struck the holy door with a golden hammer, living streams of grace and pardon from Christ, the rock, were released.” Gary presents this as though that hammer’s blows really did release “grace and pardon.” He tells readers that it was Pope Boniface VIII who began this tradition, and that “from all over Europe, pilgrims streamed to Rome to experience forgiveness and spiritual renewal.” An additional 10 million visitors in the year 2000 are expected to visit Rome to receive further installments of salvation from the Church—and Gary and his evangelical supporters approve!
