The delusion grew that the church had replaced Israel. Rome began to call itself the “new Jerusalem” and the “new Zion,” and to take unto itself the titles which God had given to Jerusalem: the “city of God” and the “holy city,” titles which Rome retains to this day. Anti-Semitism became official church doctrine as more than 100 anti-Semitic documents were published by the Roman Catholic Church between the sixth and twentieth centuries. The rationale was that “Christ crucifiers” had no rights in God’s holy kingdom. The land of Israel belonged to the Christians, not to the Jews. Crusades were fought under the popes to drive out the Turks from the Holy Land—not to give it back to the Jews but to possess it for Rome.
