To raise an army for the First Crusade, Pope Urban II promised instant entrance into heaven for all who fell in that great cause. The knights and knaves who responded with enthusiasm to that unbiblical promise left a trail of mayhem, plunder, and murder, giving the Jews they encountered on the long trek to Jerusalem the choice of baptism or death. After “liberating” that city by slaughtering the Turks, one of the victors’ first acts was to herd the Jews into the synagogue and set it ablaze.
