The spirit separated from the body remains conscious, whether in heaven or hell. We have already noted that the brain does not think. Thought originates in the spirit, which then uses the brain to cause the body to say or do its will. The rich man, whose body was in the grave, was certainly conscious in hell (Luke:16:23-31), and so are those in heaven who have been separated from their bodies: “I saw under the altar [in heaven] the souls of them that were slain for the word of God. … And they cried with a loud voice” (Revelation:6:9,10).
