Dawes indicts the field of psychology with “espousing principles that are known to be untrue and [with] implying techniques known to be invalid.” Indeed, in the famous Cambridge-Sommerville Youth Study, involving 650 underprivileged boys six to ten years of age (divided equally into two groups), follow-up 30 years later revealed that those who received therapy had more problems with “alcoholism, mental illness, job dissatisfaction and stress-related diseases” and committed significantly more serious crimes than those who were not given the “benefit” of psychological counseling. Any scientific evidence we have been able to compile proves that psychotherapy is at best ineffective and is even harmful in many cases.
