There was no more ecumenical nor anyone more honored by the world and by numerous evangelical leaders than Mother Teresa, founder of the Missionaries of Charity and its director until her death early in September 1997. On October 2, 1994, she received the U Thant Peace Award (U Thant is a Buddhist). The award was presented by Hindu leader and United Nations guru Sri Chinmoy at San Gregorio, the Missionaries of Charity convent in Rome, in recognition of Mother Teresa’s “sleepless service to humanity.”
