Nuggets from An Urgent Call to a Serious Faith by Dave Hunt - Saved, Now and Forever!
Tragically, many who call themselves Christians have not accepted the finality of the cross and the power of Christ’s resurrection. They either do not understand or find it impossible to believe what the Scripture says: “Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him…reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans:6:9-12), “Nor yet that he [Christ] should offer himself often…but now once…hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself…Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many…we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus once and for all…after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, [He] sat down on the right hand of God…by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified…there is [therefore] no more offering for sin” (Heb:9:25-10:18).
As Christ died, He cried in triumph, “It is finished,” using a Greek expression found on ancient invoices indicating that they had been paid in full. There is a blessed finality to the cross that delivers us from insecurity. Christ need never – indeed, can never – die for our sins again. It is equally impossible for those who have been “crucified with Christ” by faith in Him to be “uncrucified” and then crucified with Christ again. Paul declared, “For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God” (Col:3:3). What assurance for time and for eternity to those who believe the good news of the gospel!
