TARAHUMARA CHRISTIANS PERSECUTED

April 17, 2006

by Ian Fallis

CHIHUAHUA, Mexico: Seventy-five Tarahumara believers are finding themselves unwelcome in their own community.

The Tarahumaras number about 10,000, spread out into several communities in the mountains of northern Mexico. Fernando is a church leader and teacher in one area.

"They are suffering persecution from their own people," wrote missionary Raul Salaverria. "Their enemies would like all Christians pushed out of the community."

Complicating Fernando's ministry is the fact that only portions of the Bible have been translated. So a New Tribes missionary plans to move back into the area soon to work on translating God's Word. Fernando is expected to be his primary co-worker.

"Please pray for encouragement of the believers among the Tarahumaras, Fernando and the other leaders of this congregation, and the Bible translation work," Raul wrote (http://www.ntm.org/news/3221).
