Despite increases in wealth, disparity between the wealthy and poor would continue to increase (Revelation:6:6). In Scripture, oil and wine often denote luxurious abundance (Proverbs 21:17, Joel 2:24; Revelation 18:13). Therefore this prophecy indicates that the wealthy will continue to flourish while the poor can scarcely afford bread. Thirty years ago, the world’s richest 20% had 30 times the income of the poorest quintile. Today the ratio is 60 to 1. That means that the top 20% account for 85% of the world income, while the bottom billion’s share is only 1.4%.
