Law group: Religious double standard allowed yoga classes in California school

A legal group says trustees of a California school district showed bias by allowing the teaching of a religious form of yoga to public school students.

The Encinitas Union School District will expand its yoga program after trustees approved a $1.4 million grant.

The yoga program, which is taught to students as part of physical education, has been criticized by parents and religious groups because it teaches students Ashtanga yoga.

“If this were, say, a Christian-based exercise program, it wouldn't have survived the trial for so long,” says Dean Broyles of the National Center for Law and Policy.

A lawsuit was filed against the school district, but a superior court judge ruled that the program doesn't impose religion on students.

San Diego Superior Court Judge John S. Meyer did agree, however, that Ashtanga yoga is religious.

"Judge Meyer ruled that yoga, including Ashtanga yoga, is religious,” says Broyles, adding that ruling should have been “game, set, match” for the yoga program.

The grant will expand the program and would increase the number of yoga teachers from 10 to 18.

[TBC: In Galatians:5:11 Paul wrote of the "offense of the cross." Schools seem to have no trouble with almost any religion crossing the supposed line of "separation between Church and State" as long as the "offense" of the Gospel is missing.]
