When Will the Church Separate From the World?

New polling data suggests American Christians have conflicting religious beliefs about the Bible and its cautionary words about sex and marriage.

According to a Pew Research poll, more than half of mainline Protestants in the U.S. say casual sex is sometimes or always okay. Fully 36 percent of Evangelicals says the same thing, the poll revealed.

Christian apologist Alex McFarland says American Christians need to get back to the Bible….“For professed Christians to tacitly be okay with sex outside of marriage, or sex before marriage,”... “this is clearly contraryto what the Bible says about how a follower of Christ is to ‘possess their vessel.’”

Just like telling the truth and not stealing, sexual purity and a committed marriage are foundational to both Judaism and Christianity. God's warning against adultery is the Seventh Commandment, after all,and King David’s sexual encounter with Bathsheba, and the consequences it created, has been used as a warning to future generations about sin and its consequences.

In the New Testament, the first generation of the Church wrestled against a decadent culture, and the Apostle Paul repeatedly urged those believers to stay pure as a witness to God and to those around them. "For this is the will of God," Paul wrote in First Thessalonians, "your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God." 

According to [another] research study, more than half of Americans think religious beliefs are a matter of personal opinion, not objective facts. McFarland says that finding is an example of what the Apostle Paulwarned about in his second letter to the Thessalonians --- “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away” (2 Timothy:3:5Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
